WEkEO Hackathon

Climate change is a significant threat to our planet, with rising temperatures, extreme weather events, melting ice caps, and shifting ecosystems. This hackathon challenges you to leverage the WEkEO data platform, using Copernicus and Sentinel data, to develop solutions that mitigate climate impacts and contribute to a more sustainable future. Below are some focus areas and examples to inspire your solution development:

Sustainability Strategies

  1. Heat wave forecasts and socio-economic impacts

    • Use satellite data to monitor land surface temperatures and atmospheric conditions. Protect vulnerable populations by providing real-time alerts and recommendations to local authorities and residents.

  2. Renewable energy transition

    • Assess environmental impacts of renewable energy projects using Sentinel data. Use machine learning to predict maintenance needs and optimize renewable energy installations.

Other subtopics include: heat waves, carbon capture, sustainable transportation, reforestation, climate adaptation policies, etc.

Biodiversity & Environment Protection

  1. Habitat conservation and restoration

    • Use machine learning to detect signs of habitat degradation and send alerts. Analyze data to identify critical areas for restoration.

  2. Invasive species impact on biodiversity

    • Develop strategies for controlling invasive species using data-driven recommendations, and create community tools for reporting sightings.

Other subtopics include: clean energy, endangered species, marine conservation, sustainable land use, and more.

Extreme Weather Adaptation & Risk Mitigation

  1. Disaster preparedness & response

    • Use AI and machine learning for predictive analytics to assess the risk and impact of extreme weather events. Offer resilience-building recommendations.

  2. Polar ice cap monitoring

    • Predict sea level rise from ice cap melting and integrate data to provide forecasts for coastal cities.

Other subtopics include: wildfires, coastal erosion, infrastructure resilience, and more.

Water Quality & Sanitation

  1. Real-time water quality monitoring

    • Implement real-time alerts for water quality issues and create public dashboards for transparency.

  2. Water conservation techniques

    • Use satellite data to assist in irrigation management, and develop machine learning models to forecast water demand.

Other subtopics include: water treatment, sustainable sanitation, climate change impact on water quality, etc.

Air Quality & Pollution

  1. Monitoring air pollution in urban areas

    • Use machine learning to predict air quality trends and build a public platform for updates and reports.

  2. Role of forests in air purification

    • Assess vegetation's air purification capacity using satellite data and optimize urban green spaces.

Other subtopics include: emissions reduction technologies, public awareness, and air quality management.
